Redefining 5.1: The Project Title
The concept of X.Y (such as 5.1) in audio typically refers to a speaker system setup in which the X represents the amount of speakers and the Y represents the amount of sub woofers. For example, 5.1 refers to left, right, rear left, rear right, and center speakers (5), plus a subwoofer (1).
My later vision is to redefine 5.1 to represent four sets of musicians plus a speaker monitor array (5) and the head–tracking headphones component (1). In my trajectory to this later vision, I have, as of April 2010, built a prototype in which speakers take the place of musicians and there is no speaker monitor array.
